My personal obsession with Sarpaneva harks back to 2008 with his debut of the Korona K3. Never in my life had a watch inspired me like that original piece with two rose gold enigmatic moon faces staring into my soul. That day marked the first time I took notice of Independent Watchmaking.
Fast forward 17 years, Stepan Sarpaneva has paid tribute to the aforementioned watch with the Supermoon Blue, measurably improving his original icon. One of the most striking enhancements is the larger solid white gold Moons, now 12 millimeters in diameter which takes center stage under the dial to pair with SARPANEVA's white gold plated hands which are frosted on one side and polished on the other for excellent legibility.
Stepan's inspiration for the Supermoon blends urban and natural elements, drawing from the intricate ironwork of Helsinki's pavements. His vision for the Moon on his Korona watches was deeply influenced by the mood and character he observed in Finland. He sought to create a Moon that embodied a specific emotional nuance, one that resonated with the Finnish spirit. According to Stepan, "everyone here in Finland floats around with an aura of slight melancholy," which made a traditionally smiling Moon seem out of place. Instead, he opted for a more complex expression—one that combined aristocratic melancholy with a subtle, almost indecisive emotion, leaving the Moon's nature somewhere between happiness and sadness. This enigmatic face, which has become Stepan's trademark, reflects a deep connection to his cultural surroundings. The Moon on the Korona K3 is neither fully joyous nor sorrowful; it simply "is," much like the people of Finland.
The reverse side an extensively modified Soprod A10 caliber which beats at 4 Hz and delivers a Power Reserve of 42 hours. Black Gold plating, Perlage and Côtes de Genève finishing can be viewed underneath the stainless steel rotor set with a White Gold Moonface and weights.
The Stainless Stainless Steel case measures 42mm x 11.4mm x 46mm lug-to-lug and is Water Resistant to 100 Meters. The watch is attached to a 22mm black alligator strap which tapers down to 18mm at the buckle.
