The Urwerk UR-120 Space Black represents an evolution of sci-fi design and futuristic haute horlogerie, carrying forward the architectural lineage of the legendary UR-110 into a dark cosmic aesthetic. Nicknamed "Spock" due to the mesmerizing split-satellite hour mechanism that mimics the iconic Vulcan hand salute, this timepiece captures the bold spirit of Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner.
Dial side, time display is reimagined through an ultra-complex revolving satellite complication mounted on central planetary gears. The central three-armed carousel carries hour satellites that sweep along a sweeping 0-to-60 minute scale on the right hand side of the display. When an hour satellite exits the minute track, it undergoes a mechanical metamorphosis: the module splits open into two distinct rectangular studs, rotates on its individual axis, and rejoins seamlessly to reveal the next numerical hour marker. The entire dial structure is finished in dark tones with crisp, hand-applied Super-LumiNova on the numerals and minute track for excellent nighttime legibility.
The reverse side reveals a small glimpse of the proprietary self-winding manufacture caliber UR-20.01, operating at a frequency of 4Hz and delivers a 48 hour power reserve. The movement utilizes a star-shaped central carousel along with intricate components fabricated from ARCAP, beryllium-copper, anodized aluminum, and LIGA-processed nickel. Automatic winding is regulated by Urwerk’s signature central rotor governed by a Windfänger airscrew, preventing excessive winding wear.
The sculpted case with articulating lugs measures 47mm wide x 44mm in length x 15.8mm thick and is constructed from lightweight sandblasted titanium coupled with a sandblasted steel bezel, both finished with a durable black DLC and protective silicon coating. Furnished on an OEM green calfskin strap embossed with a ballistic textile pattern and a signed DLC titanium pin buckle, and an additional black calfskin strap constructed in the same manner as the green strap.
