Finland’s history is deeply connected to its landscape - from thousands of lakes stretching across the country to ancient bedrock, vast forests and the quiet determination to build and endure in a demanding northern environment.
In 1940, during the construction of Finland’s extensive defensive line in the east, another remarkable part of this landscape was uncovered: spectrolite. Hidden beneath the ancient bedrock, this rare Finnish gemstone revealed an extraordinary play of color, unlike ordinary abradorite. To this day, spectrolite is found naturally only in Ylämaa, Finland.
The S.U.F Helsinki Vetehinen Blue features a dial crafted from carefully selected Finnish spectrolite. Each stone is completely unique, carrying its own landscape of colour and light.
While this edition is named Blue, the colour is never fixed. Blue of the Finnish Depths moves from deep lake blues into midnight tones, revealing fleeting, aurora-like flashes as the light changes. The effect is almost hypnotic, creating an illusion of endless depth - as though the dial extends far beyond the crystal itself.
For Stepan, this is more than a beautiful material. It is a way of bringing Finland’s landscape to the wrist - its deep lakes, ancient stone and shifting northern light. Each dial carries a fragment of that landscape, transformed through Stepan’s design into something entirely its own.
The "Vetehinen Blue Spectrolite" is powered by a modified Soprod A10 movement which is oiled, assembled, and tested at the S.U.F workshop. The movement operates at 4Hz and carries a power reserve of 42 hours.
The Stainless Steel case measures 42mm x 11.45mm x 51mm lug-to-lug and is 300M/1000ft water resistant. The watch is furnished with a 20mm black Nordic Elk strap to which tapers to 18mm at the Sarpaneva stainless steel buckle and a navy Erika's Original MN strap.
As each cut of Spectrolite is unique, no two pieces will appear identical and will appear different than the dial in these photos. To reserve a watch please email brandon@horologybythesea.com.
